- According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 466 million people (5% of the worldβs population) live with disabling hearing loss.
- Among them, 34 million are children.
- If left unaddressed, this number could rise to 900 million by 2050.
- Disabling hearing loss is defined as:
- Adults (15+ years): greater than 40 dB
- Children (0β14 years): greater than 30 dB
π Types of Hearing Loss
- Sensorineural: Inner ear or nerve damage, often age-related or due to prolonged noise exposure. Usually managed with hearing aids.
- Conductive: Caused by blockages (earwax, fluid, tumors) in the outer or middle ear. Treatment may involve medicine or surgery.
- Mixed: A combination of sensorineural and conductive hearing loss.
- Congenital: Present at birth.

- Genetics, head or ear trauma, and prenatal exposure to disease.
- Illnesses such as meningitis, mumps, severe jaundice, and chickenpox can also contribute.
